Martin Coates
Technical Director, Beca
Martin Coates has over 25 years industrial experience in variety of engineering and man-management roles. He is currently employed as a Technical Director with Beca in Auckland, delivering Asset Management solutions for clients – in effect, helping them to achieve optimum lifecycle cost from their assets. During his career Martin has also developed a unique and innovative approach to communication called “Visualisation”. The process includes facilitating workshops to translate complex messages into hand-drawn illustrations in order to communicate key messages in an engaging way. This helps shape a common understanding of key issues and alignment of thinking through group interaction and discussion.
Recent clients include the Victoria Park Tunnel project in Auckland, the Auckland Motorway Alliance, New Zealand Steel, various utility companies and branches of both New Zealand and Australian Defence.
In 2008 Martin won the Beca Innovation Award for “Building Relationships” based on visual communications at NZ Steel. This led to Martin presenting at the World Conference of Visual Thinkers (Vizthink) in San Jose, California in 2009. Martin also uses the visual approach to lecture in Project Management for the MBA program at the Auckland Institute of Studies.
Visualisation - A powerful tool for communicating change
In the current world of information overload, the need for organisations to communicate change effectively has never been so great. How do you get staff and clients on board as quickly as possible, understanding new systems and roles? The high level strategic vision for a company can often be lost in translation before it reaches the people on the shop floor, yet the company requires understanding and buy-in across the whole organisation to realise the vision. This presentation will cover the current challenges to effective communication, the Visualisation process, and the benefits of using this approach. The presentation will include a number of real life examples and success stories.
